Find Relief From Your Knee Arthritis Pain

Arthritis anywhere in your body can place limitations on your life, but when it strikes your knees, the impact can greatly affect how you make your way in the world. If you’re tired of being hobbled by the pain and stiffness of knee osteoarthritis (OA), the good news is that there are solutions that can relieve the pain and help your damaged tissues rebuild.

At Physical Medicine Institute, we understand how debilitating knee pain can be, which is why Dr. Sam Tabibian and our team offer several different solutions. Here’s a look at how we can both remedy your pain and help your joints rebuild from within.

Understanding knee osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and affects more than 30 million adults in the United States, half of whom are under the age of 65. This form of arthritis is also referred to as wear-and-tear arthritis, as it develops over years of use, but it can also come on after an injury.

The hallmark of OA is the breakdown of cartilage, the slippery substance in joints that covers the ends of your bones to promote easy movement. Unfortunately, your cartilage doesn’t readily rebuild itself since it contains no blood vessels. What this means is that OA is largely considered incurable and progressive. But there are ways that we can slow the progression of the disease and restore pain-free movement.

Relieving your knee pain

To help restore your quality of life, there are several ways that we can approach your arthritic knees.

First, we offer corticosteroid injections that contain both an analgesic and a steroid, which combat pain and inflammation, respectively. The analgesic works quickly to quiet the pain while the steroid goes to work to bring down the inflammation, allowing you more freedom of movement.

The goal of this type of treatment is get you to a place where you can not only move more freely, but also do the work necessary to strengthen the support systems in your knees through targeted exercises.

Another avenue for relieving pain is through a genicular block, which targets the nerves in your knee that are responsible for sending the pain signals. Here again, our goal is to relieve the pain long enough for you to take further steps for longer-lasting relief, which brings us to our next treatment.

While the above two treatments work very well in relieving your pain and reducing inflammation, they don’t address the root cause of your pain — the breakdown of cartilage.

To give your cartilage the resources it needs to rebuild, we offer platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. These injections contain a high concentrate of your own platelets, which play a critical role in healing. When we inject the PRP into your knees, it releases growth factors that create the ultimate healing environment in your joints.
